Today was a nice and sunny day in DC, which was lucky since the weather report said otherwise (rain showers). We spent the morning and most of the afternoon exploring several landmarks including the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln and World War II Memorials. Walking around in DC is fun because there's so much to see, but the hot, humid weather and all the walking tired us out quickly. Since it was so hot and humid outside, we bought a refreshing, frozen lemonade at a food truck and took a little break on a park bench to eat it. Frozen lemonade never tasted so good. Thank goodness for these food trucks on every corner!
We also had a chance to tour and have lunch at the U.S. Department of State. Riks' aunt works there so we got security clearance and our own little visitor name tags. It was pretty awesome! By the time we finished lunch it was time for us to leave for our next destination, North Carolina so we said our good-byes and took the metro back to the station where our car was parked.
The drive to NC from DC was a bit rough, there was way too much traffic! It delayed us over an hour from our estimated time of arrival. To top it off, it started to rain. Hard. What is it about us and our luck with rain? The traffic eventually died down, but the rain didn't... As we got closer to NC, it began raining harder...
Rain and trees, trees and rain. Yup. That pretty much describes our view on our way to NC. As the sun started to set, the rain finally eased up, which was nice because we didn't have to get wet while unloading our car when we arrived at our hosts' -The Nishimotos- home. It was a tiring drive so you can imagine our delight when we walked into their home and smelled delicious Japanese curry waiting for us! A simple thing like a home cooked meal can feel like the most amazing thing when you are constantly on the road eating trail mix and granola bars.
After such a satisfying dinner and good conversation with Lirica (SUA c/o 2014), it's time to get ready to sleep for tomorrow's volunteer event.
Rain, rain, stay away...
