One of the hardest things about traveling is saying good-bye to people and places. Especially on this road trip, our time spent in each place is so fleeting that the good-bye morning is always difficult. Just when we're getting comfortable somewhere; just when it starts to grow on us, it's already time to leave. Florida was no different. We had a scrumptious homemade breakfast of scrambled eggs with the works, waffles, and bacon, and then we had a hard time bidding the Hernandez Family farewell. What a wonderful family and such excellent hosts! After a round of hugs and well wishes, it was time to get back to the terrain we've grown so familiar with: road.
We welcomed the long, beautiful drive through the south. On our way onto the Interstate Highway, Nics spotted a huge tortoise crossing the street! She freaked out and wanted to pull over to carry it across the street; however, we assumed that this was a common sight to see in Florida and instead hoped that local Floridians know how to maneuver around them. We saw a couple more after that. Only in Florida.
We passed through the lush greenery of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi before making it to our destination about 10 hours later: Louisiana. Our host wasn't home to greet us so we found the concealed key and let ourselves into our new temporary abode. We were so exhausted after the drive that we both just collapsed on the bed and napped. Even now as we've woken from our slumber, the dream world looms close, threatening to seize our consciousness once again. Since our next volunteer activity is tomorrow morning, we'll just acquiesce to the nagging drowsiness that's overcome us.
Good night from The Big Easy,
Nics & Riks
