Not gonna lie, we overslept a tad bit. Just a tad though. We were supposed to leave Louisiana this morning by 8:00AM, but we didn't even get up until 8:30AM. It happens. Anyway, when we finally departed, we said good-bye to our awesome host, Jonathan and hit the road toward Texas. Texas is a pretty freakin' HUGE state. Once we crossed the state border, we were still 3 hours from Austin, our destination. So we decided to make a fuel stop - not for the car, for us. We drove in at Sonic's and got some of their hand-mixed shakes and a subpar combo meal to share. Really, when did gravy become a substitute for ketchup/sweet & sour sauce? WHEN?! And what the heck is up with giving only ONE onion ring?! ONE. Lastly, do not, DO NOT, call something "Texas" toast if all you're really going to do is toast a piece of bread. Ok, totally done ranting about that sad-excuse for a combo. Shakes were good though.
After the last lonely 3-hour stretch of land, we finally arrived at our friend Nico's place. What a surreal moment. As Nico rushed out to greet us, we couldn't believe that, after over a year of not seeing each other, we were actually standing in her drive-way in Austin.
Her mama had dinner waiting for us when we got in. So the three of us caught up on what we've each been doing since we graduated and reminisced on good times while eating the best tortilla soup we've ever had. It still amazes us how Soka relationships don't seem to move through time in the same way as everything else; we talked like we'd never even skipped a beat.
After dinner, we made plans for what we want to do tomorrow after we volunteer. We're going to meet up with Nico near the capitol after she gets off of work. Tomorrow promises to be another full day of volunteering and sight-seeing.
[TKC Road Trip Pro-Tip #8: Water, water, water. Make sure you always have enough drinking water!]
Keepin' it weird in Austin!
